Lónsöræfi, July 2023

Lónsöræfi is a national park in the east of Iceland, hugging the eastern fringe of the vast Vatnjökull glaicer. It‘s pretty empty most of the time, and poorly way-marked in the north, so a guide is a very good idea if you don‘t fancy getting very lost in a potentially very exposed part of the Highlands. I spent five days walking through it with a group of Icelanders, organised through the very lovely Ferðfélag Íslands . At 85km, with over 3000m of gain, this is no walk in the park, but the immensity of the landscape makes up for the exertion.

My journal from the trip is posted below:

Lónsöræfi Day 1: Eyjabakkar – Geldingafell

Lónsöræfi Day 2: Geldingafell – Vesturdalur – Egilssel

Lónsöræfi Day 3: Egilssel – Tröllakrókahnaus – Víðidalur

Lónsöræfi Day 4: Egilssel – Múlaskáli

Lónsöræfi Day 5: Múlaskáli – Smiðjunes

An extended set of photos can be found here.
